News & Views – February 2019

I read with interest an article by Winston Aldworth, Travel Editor at the NZ Herald which was printed on Tuesday 29 January 2019…I have included it below – food for thought??

“I picked up a hitchhiker in the South Island back in December.  He was a young traveller, working as a waiter in one of New Zealand’s most prestigious hospitality businesses.  I asked him what it was like and he painted a grim picture.

Staff are poorly paid, he said.  They don’t get a meal at work – despite it being a restaurant where they’re expected to know all about the food.  He had a hungry colleague who got into trouble for wolfing down leftovers from a plate.

Paid badly, treated badly and regarded as little more than drones for carrying plates and wearing a smile – and this in a premises where international customers will spend thousands of dollars.  It’s little wonder that these workers don’t stick around.

New Zealand has a hospitality problem.  It’s rare to find restaurants that properly value and retain front of house staff.  This needs to change.”

I for one don’t believe that the majority of our businesses would view their staff as drones, nor treat them with the contempt that this article seems to indicate, however, we do need to ensure that we are creating a culture and environment that encourages our staff to enjoy working for us and therefore increase the rate of retention and enthusiasm within our teams.

Useful Quotes for the start of 2019!!

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”                                                                                                                        (Carl Bard)
